During the mid 1900’s, the mindset of the people was to create a weapon of mass destruction fo rsupposed “security”. The first attempts of making this type of massive weapon, came when Albert Einstein told President Roosevelt that it would be incredibly wise to begin an atomic program. The president started an atomic program that included uranium enrichment as well as designs to achieve maximum reaction. The first atomic bomb was detonated on July 16, 1945, in New Mexico. This bomb was called “trinity”. The blast was roughly equivalent to 18.6 kilotons of TNT and accelerated upwards at a rate of 300 mps. The atomic bomb had become an incredibly essential “tool” during the second World War. The first atomic bombs used in a war situation were “Little Boy” and “Fat Man”, which were detonated over Hiroshima andNagasaki, Japan in World War II.
The first atomic plan made the way for the incredibly and extensive atomic program that is now in place as well as provided much relief to America within the years of trouble during the mid 1900’s. The purpose of the project, directed by physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, was to build an atom bomb before Germany did. AfterRoosevelt’s death in April 1945, Harry S. Truman became president and inherited the bomb-development program. At this point, the new weapon had two purposes. First, it could be used to force Japan to surrender. Second, possession of the bomb would enable the United States, and not the USSR, to control postwar policy.
The tests were done more and more, even though the effects were deadly. We finally realized that the fallout caused forms of cancer and cell growth. We as Americans thought that this program wil enable us to take on any country in the world. We felt that it would give us a sense of security, even though that this nuclear program was only endangering the enviorment, and the people that live within it.
